Primary 5
Welcome to Mr McKenna’s P5 Class – Term 2
A warm welcome back to our Primary 5 class! As we begin Term 2, the children are continuing to show great enthusiasm for learning and are ready for another exciting term ahead. This term, we’ll build on the strong foundations in literacy and numeracy while exploring a thought-provoking new topic.
Our theme, “It’s a Disaster”, will focus on natural and man-made disasters. Through research and discussion, we’ll learn about events such as earthquakes, floods, volcanic eruptions, and oil spills, as well as their impact on people and the environment. The children will be encouraged to think critically about causes, consequences, and how communities respond to these challenges.
In literacy, we’ll be focusing on descriptive writing. The children will learn how to create vivid settings and bring their ideas to life using powerful words and phrases. We’ll explore techniques like using sensory details (what you can see, hear, feel), and adding interesting sentence starters to make their writing more exciting. Pupils will also look at examples to see how writers use language to create atmosphere and show how characters react in different situations. These skills will help them become confident and creative storytellers.
In numeracy, we’ll strengthen our understanding of fractions, decimals, and percentages, alongside problem-solving and data handling. We’ll also be developing skills in measurement, including length, weight, and capacity, through practical activities linked to our topic. For example, pupils might compare rainfall amounts or measure distances related to disaster zones. These real-life links will make learning meaningful and engaging.
In Digital Art and Design, we’ll continue working with Adobe Express, creating digital posters and presentations to raise awareness about disasters and safety measures. Pupils will develop their design and communication skills while producing visually engaging content.
We’ll continue to make great use of online learning platforms such as Nessy, AR, Mathletics, Google Classroom, My School, and C2k Newsdesk. These tools support learning both in school and at home, and you can access them using the links below.
Here’s to a fantastic first term filled with curiosity, creativity, and exciting discoveries!
