Safe Cycling at St. Eugene’s
Many thanks to our Sustrans Active Travel Officer, Donna who brought the ‘Dr. Bike’ safety clinic to St. Eugene’s. This was a great chance for our pupils to make sure their bicycles were in safe working order.
Every time you ride your bike, you can use A B C D to check that everything is safe:
A: Air in the tyres - pump them up with a bicycle pump if soft to touch.
B: Brakes - stand beside your bike and roll it forward. When you squeeze the brakes, the back wheel of the bike should lift off the ground if the brakes are in good working order.
C: Chain - try to keep the bicycle chain silver / black (with oil) through regular cleaning and lubrication. Rusted chains can jam or break while cycling.
D: Drop - Lift and drop your bicycle a cm or two off the ground to check that no parts or accessories have come loose.
